You may sometimes experience the disk space on your C: drive going low again and again. The pop-up prompts you to clean up your disk as soon as possible. Even if you start with a decent free space in C: drive, you may ultimately land up with the problem of low disk space in the drive where your OS is installed.
Now, this occurs very frequently to those who work with really heavy software,i.e., software that require too much of disk space to process your job. Most commonly used software like Adobe Photoshop, 3Ds Max, After Effects, Solidworks, MATLAB etc. consume a lot of memory while you work on them. Personally, I had an experience of losing 17GB of free space on C: Drive while working on photoshop for 1 day and not cleaning my C: Drive for temporary files even once.
Here are a series of questions that would surely be bogging down your mind -
Should I ignore the Low Disk Space warning?
Answer: Of course not, until the space is low in drives other than those where your OS is installed.
What if I ignore the Low Disk Space warning and go ahead?
Answer: Frankly speaking, you won't be able to go ahead. A time will come when ultimately windows would become slow even leading to critical crashes at times leading to the loss of potential data. You won't be able to work as the windows will stop responding and that too very often.
What to do?
Answer: Keep your C Drive as empty as possible. It is generally recommended to leave 10% of the total capacity of the Drive. If not possible, leave at least 5% to give some room to the programs to run.
Should I delete my data when a Low Disk Space pop-up appears?
Answer: No, there's no need. Here are some simple steps and a software that you need to install to keep some space free in C drive.
- Empty your temporary memory.
You must empty the temporary memory as most of the data of the processes is fed into it for temporary use. To empty the temp memory follow these steps:-
Go to start > Type run > Open it > Now in the empty box type "%temp%" without the quotes > press enter > A new folder opens > Press "ctrl" + "A" .All items will be selected > Press "shift"+"delete" > A delete dialogue box will open asking you to confirm the permanent delete > Press enter.
That's it. You must have freed some space from the C drive. - Download "C Cleaner" and install it.
Now download "CCEnhancer" and install it.
Open CCleaner.
Under the windows tab, tick all the options except "Wipe Free space"-
Now under the applications tab tick all the options and click on "Run Cleaner"-
Wait for sometime till the disk is being cleaned.
After the disk is cleaned you will be left will too much of free hard disk space. If you are cleaning your disk for the first time, Ccleaner might take some time depending upon the unwanted files on your system.
